While we in the UK have regular general and local elections, (even allowing for a year’s Covid disruption), Palestinians are now gearing up for their first elections in 15 years. Hastings & Rye Palestine Solidarity Campaign have arranged an online event with three Palestinian speakers for Wednesday 21st to put this rare happening in context, as the group explains.
Hastings Community of Sanctuary, along with other refugee support groups and parties, has reacted angrily to the Home Office’s decision to move asylum-seekers back into Napier Barracks, despite the many criticisms made by an independent inquiry and a legal action which would outlaw the move due to be heard this week. A petition to make the town’s historic and much-loved Alexandra Park safer by installing CCTV and lighting has gained over 17,000 signatures in just over a week. It was started on Wednesday last week by Claire Noble, whose best friend was brutally attacked there in daylight last June. Emma Harwood reports.

Hastings is set to join the rest of the globe in marking the United Nations Anti-Racism day this Saturday March 2o. The day was previewed back on March 2 with an online talk featuring a host of local and national speakers. Local group Hastings Stand Up to Racism issued the following press release detailing how Hastings will be taking part in this global stand against racism and fascism.

East Sussex Pension Fund has divested from Elbit, an Israeli arms manufacturer, in what Hastings & Rye Palestine Solidarity Campaign claims as a major victory for campaigners. There was no progress however towards persuading the fund to withdraw its investments in fossil fuel companies. Nick Terdre reports.
Friday 22 January marked a historic moment as a United Nations ban on nuclear weapons officially came into force. Hastings was among the many municipalities to support the treaty when Hastings Borough Council voted in favour last October.
