Proposal to add BHCC councillors to East Sussex Pension Fund Committee

A Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) Councillor will propose that East Sussex County Council (ESCC) add two BHCC Councillors to the decision-making body for the East Sussex Pension Fund Committee at a meeting of the East Sussex Pension Board at County Hall in Lewes this Friday [2]. ESCC leader rejects call to back windfall tax on Big Oil

Today at County Hall, Lewes, the leader of East Sussex County Council (ESCC) rejected a call to back a windfall tax on Big Oil, as climate campaigners staged a theatrical protest outside demanding that ESCC stop shielding the giant fossil fuel companies that are reaping huge windfall profits from the war in Ukraine. 26 Hastings’ election candidates sign Climate Pledge

Twenty six candidates for the 5 May local elections in Hastings & St Leonards have signed a pledge backing accelerated climate action, including divesting the East Sussex Pension Fund from fossil fuels. As of 10am on Monday 25 April, 26 candidates from Hastings & St Leonards had signed the ‘ABCD Climate Action Pledge’ created by the South East Climate Alliance (SECA): all of the Green candidates (16), seven Labour candidates, 2 Liberal Democrats and 1 Conservative [1].

COP26: Hastings calls for action, not hot air

The population of Hastings has added its voice to the international marches appealing to our governments to act to stop climate change. Recent actions include a march through town, a protest at County Hall in Lewes and a call for Barclays Bank to stop funding fossil fuels. HOT’s Erica Smith catches up with the campaigners who are demanding an end to hot air.

Fudging the climate emergency

This week, East Sussex County Council was accused of failing to address climate crisis two years after declaring a Climate Emergency. HOT’s Erica Smith was one of many Hastings residents who donned a two-year old’s birthday party hat and took the train to Lewes to add her voice to the protest.

Divestment success “major victory” says local PSC

East Sussex Pension Fund has divested from Elbit, an Israeli arms manufacturer, in what Hastings & Rye Palestine Solidarity Campaign claims as a major victory for campaigners. There was no progress however towards persuading the fund to withdraw its investments in fossil fuel companies. Nick Terdre reports.

ESCC urged to accept link between fossil fuels and climate change


Over 90 members of the public from across the country have called on East Sussex County Council (ESCC) to tell the truth about climate and fossil fuels, re-submitting three key questions on climate change to the ESCC Full Council meeting on 1 December. These same questions went unanswered at October’s Full Council meeting [1].
