Whistleblower reveals “cover-up” over  councillor complaint

The move by an East Sussex County Council committee to keep from public view the finding of a breach of confidentiality against a leading councillor has been scuppered by a whistleblower. Nick Terdre reports.

HBC Cabinet to discuss support for Afghan refugees

First Afghan families allocated to Hastings as council pledges to aid resettlement programme

As the process of finding homes for Afghan refugees evacuated to the UK gets under way, Hastings Borough Council has agreed to resettle two families out of eight allocated to East Sussex in an initial step. Local refugee support groups are also gearing up to play a role. Nick Terdre reports.

Local councils and voluntary organisations step up to help the homeless live, work, thrive

Due to Government funding during the initial stage of lockdown there was a great effort to get the homeless off the street and housed in hotels, hostels or whatever accommodation could be found. That funding, sadly, did not last a year. Now, however, with the realisation of the difference a secure place to live can make, voluntary organisation are working together to support the homeless.  HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was interested to find out how they and local councils are stepping up to help those who have fallen through the system.

HBC resumes face-to-face meetings

With the annual and full council meetings which take place on Wednesday, Hastings Borough Council is returning to face-to-face meetings. New faces will be present and some old ones missing, and committee memberships will have to be amended, including the Cabinet. Nick Terdre reports.

53 County Council candidates sign pledge for fossil fuel divestment

53 candidates for the 6 May elections to East Sussex County Council (ESCC) have signed a climate action pledge, committing themselves to supporting the divestment of the East Sussex Pension Fund from fossil fuels – the Conservatives are only main political party with no signatories in East Sussex. The East Sussex Pension Fund, which is administered by East Sussex County Council, currently has over £70m of local people’s pension monies invested in the giant oil and gas companies like Shell and BP. Erica Smith looks at which candidates in the Hastings area have signed the pledge.

Council calls for comments on draft Local Plan

The new Local Plan for Hastings is out to consultation in draft, and the council has issued a call for people to get involved and give their views – it will be the guiding document for planning for the next 18 years. Nick Terdre reports.
