Hastings Festival of Sanctuary is back – the annual event expressing local solidarity with those come to these shores seeking refuge from persecution will take place at Hastings Museum on Sunday 12 September. Local musicians and artists will contribute to a day of community, creativity and hope, says the organiser, Hastings Community of Sanctuary. Nick Terdre reports.
With the start of Refugee Week approaching on Monday, Home Secretary Priti Patel’s ever harder line against asylum-seekers, backed by her apparent unwillingness to abide by the UK’s international commitments, has prompted refugee support groups to mount a collective campaign for a fair and humane system, as Felicity Laurence of Hastings Community of Sanctuary Campaigns team explains.
Hastings Community of Sanctuary, along with other refugee support groups and parties, has reacted angrily to the Home Office’s decision to move asylum-seekers back into Napier Barracks, despite the many criticisms made by an independent inquiry and a legal action which would outlaw the move due to be heard this week. October is a month of action on various fronts for local refugee support groups, including a food collection this coming weekend, a poster campaign around town and the delivery of a petition urging the government to lift the ban on asylum seekers working – all this against the background of the Home Secretary’s announcement that she plans to reform the “broken” asylum system. Hastings and Rye MP Sally-Ann Hart is concerned about refugees crossing the Channel in small boats and making landfall along the south-east coast. Having written to the home secretary about the matter, she has now tabled a question for the home secretary who is due to make an appearance in the Commons on Monday 8 June. Nick Terdre reports.
