“Lack of vision” in HBC’s climate change strategy

Hastings Borough Council says it is taking steps to implement its climate change strategy, including establishing an internal board, and calls on residents to play their part. Its actions have drawn scepticism and criticism from some quarters, including the claim that its plan lacks vision and ambition. Nick Terdre reports.

Council encourages residents to take part in ‘No Mow May’

In a bid to help tackle climate change Hastings Borough Council is encouraging residents to do their part by not doing anything at all! Though many have time on their hands and the weather currently on their side, the council has issued a release hoping that residents will neglect their lawns for this month in order to support pollinating insects and do their part for the environment.

Post-Covid reboot needed to orient town towards climate change objectives?

Now that the council’s climate change strategy is in the public domain, the voices omitted from helping to form it can be heard. Chris Lewcock, former chair of Hastings Urban Design Group, local government town planner and lecturer in the built environment, wonders whether, when we are past the Covid-19 crisis, a Hastings reboot conference open to all could help us put the climate emergency centre-stage. Council’s roadmap to carbon-neutral Hastings

Armed with a climate change strategy and action plan, Hastings Borough Council has embarked on a journey to make the town carbon-neutral by 2030, as called for in the climate emergency motion approved last year. Nick Terdre describes the main features of the plan.
