Active Travel: ESCC plan out to consultation as DfT announces £175m for new schemes

While a consultation is under way on East Sussex County Council’s walking and cycling plan, the Department for Transport has announced funding of £175m for projects approved in the second phase of its Emergency Active Travel Fund – together with stringent conditions to be met by councils applying for it. Funding available for closed businesses through HBC

Financial support for local businesses obliged to close during the current national lockdown is available through Hastings Borough Council, which has also received funding enabling it to deploy dedicated staff to advise businesses on compliance with Covid-19 provisions. Cycling fatalities rose during first month of lockdown

While cycling blossomed during the first lockdown, so did the number of fatal accidents involving cyclists. Looking at accident figures over the years, it is clear that much needs to be done to bring the safety of cyclists to an acceptable level. The risks run by cyclists also include the damaging effects of inhaling vehicle emissions. Nick Terdre reports, photos by Russell Jacobs.

Construction of Queensway Gateway Road resumes

Sea Change Sussex has resumed construction of the Queensway Gateway Road after a long delay. The road is now following a temporary route while East Sussex County Council seeks to take possession of the area needed to fulfil its original trajectory through compulsory purchase. Nick Terdre reports.

Vigil on the Stade to mourn family drowned in Channel

A well-attended vigil was held in the Stade Open Space on Sunday to mourn the family of five who lost their lives in the Channel last week. Seeking refuge is not a crime but a legal right, Polly Gifford of Hastings Community of Sanctuary told the gathering. Nick Terdre reports.

HBC funds charity to supply half-term food hampers

During the half-term week HBC has provided funding to Education Futures Trust to provide food hampers to children entitled to free school meals. Several Labour councillors have criticised the local MP and ESCC leader for “failing to guarantee” holiday meals for children in their wards. Nick Terdre reports.

Commons bills offers glimmer of hope for legalisation of humanist weddings

Following the failure of a High Court application this summer to secure legal status for humanist weddings, a private member’s bill is now seeking the same end in the Commons. If this also fails, it is likely humanists will have to wait at least until 2023, when the Government is expected to implement recommendations for changes in wedding law from the Law Commission.
