Cycling fatalities rose during first month of lockdown

While cycling blossomed during the first lockdown, so did the number of fatal accidents involving cyclists. Looking at accident figures over the years, it is clear that much needs to be done to bring the safety of cyclists to an acceptable level. The risks run by cyclists also include the damaging effects of inhaling vehicle emissions. Nick Terdre reports, photos by Russell Jacobs.

ESCC’s Active Travel package hit hard by local opposition

In the face of local opposition East Sussex County Council’s package of walking and cycling schemes funded under the government’s Active Travel programme has been substantially reduced – only five out of 16 schemes are definitely going ahead while the fate of another two has still to be decided. Proposals for second round funding have been submitted. Nick Terdre reports.

Cycling/walking route among proposals for Hastings in new active travel funding round

East Sussex County Council is now preparing proposals for the second round of funding under the government’s active travel fund. Grassroots groups in Hastings are proposing a sea front-station walking/cycling route as well as cycle racks in strategic locations. Nick Terdre reports.

Cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable transport will be boosted by funding made available to local government. HBC says it is working with ESCC to find the best ways to make use of the money – when it arrives. Nick Terdre reports.
