Paul Barnett elected new Labour leader in Hastings

Just over a month before local elections, local Labour has elected Cllr Paul Barnett as its new group leader. While waiting to be endorsed as council leader, he will be in the forefront when Labour launches its election campaign in the town centre on Saturday. Nick Terdre reports.

Sewage detritus remains after ineffective beach clean

Southern Water has told MP Sally-Ann Hart that it performed a clean-up of the section of Bulverhythe beach polluted by July’s sewage leak, but much detritus remains in place. It has also made compensation offers to several affected hut owners – the going rate is around £950. Nick Terdre reports.

Pop-up vaccination and testing sessions in Hastings this week

Walk-in vaccination clinics will be held in Hastings town centre this week and a mobile testing unit is also operating in West St Leonards until Sunday as the health authorities deploy additional resources to combat the rising tide of infections. Report by Nick Terdre, photos by Russell Jacobs.

£110m at stake as Town Deal plan goes in

The Town Investment Plan – Hastings’ Town Deal bid – could bring more than £110m into the town to fund a range of projects. If the Town Deal board’s vision becomes reality, Hastings will become the South East’s first green city, with new housing, commercial and leisure facilities, new jobs and two regional ‘green skills’ bases. Council calls for comments on draft Local Plan

The new Local Plan for Hastings is out to consultation in draft, and the council has issued a call for people to get involved and give their views – it will be the guiding document for planning for the next 18 years. Nick Terdre reports.

Coronavirus statistical update: Hastings and Rother into Tier 4 as new variant comes into play

The rapidly worsening state of the coronavirus in Hastings and Rother has led to these areas being placed in a newly created Tier 4, in a move which will wreck many residents’ Christmas plans. Nick Terdre reports, research and graphics by Russell Hall.

Funding available for closed businesses through HBC

Financial support for local businesses obliged to close during the current national lockdown is available through Hastings Borough Council, which has also received funding enabling it to deploy dedicated staff to advise businesses on compliance with Covid-19 provisions.
