That’s the question posed by Hastings & Rye Liberal Democrats in response to news that the Conservative government is holding a consultation prior to putting new legislation through the House of Commons in respect of town-planning.

The government has launched a consultation on its proposals for the radical reform of the planning system in England. HOT has asked for the views of a wide range of parties – MP Sally-Ann Hart and Conservative councillors, Hastings Borough Council, the local Liberal Democrat and Green parties, a local developer, Gemselect, and Hastings Urban Design Group. This is a root-and-branch reform, backed by an 84-page white paper, so before we publish their responses, here is a summary of what is proposed. Nick Terdre reports, photos by Russell Jacobs.

If you’re out for a stroll along Hastings seafront, keep an eye open for a series of posters running the length of the seafront from the town centre to just beyond London Road. The posters, which were commissioned by Women’s Voice, mark the 50th anniversary of the first national Women’s Liberation Movement (WLM) Conference, which was held at Ruskin College, Oxford, in 1970.
