James Burton’s original seafront church was destroyed by a doodlebug in July 1944. A replacement was designed by the well regarded Gilbert Scott brothers and finished in 1961. The later church is now in geological trouble and was closed by the Church of England a few years ago. It is an exceptional building (Grade II listed) that should not be lost. A recent meeting addressed ways of saving it. Bernard McGinley reports and took the photos.
HOT photographer Russell Jacobs has been out and about in Hastings and St Leonards, snapping what comes his way, whether people or buildings in the news or emergencies he comes across. Closure seems to be the theme of the moment – and not necessarily due to lockdown. Text by Nick Terdre.
Local design consultant Ken Davis appreciates the range of architectural styles to be seen around Hastings. But he is concerned that rather than embracing the resulting character of local distinctiveness, planning policy consistently calls for congruency with existing buildings. All photos by the writer.
Science-on-Sea is Hastings Urban Design Group’s proposal for the Town Deal, taking advantage of the town’s many connections with the sea. The cultural and scientific hub and visitor attraction would be centred on the redundant St Leonards church building on the sea front. Nick Terdre reports.
