PhotoHastings 2022 festival ends with Dan Percy and Agness Clark show

Hastings Arts Forum is holding the last show of the 2020 PhotoHastings Festival. The season has been excellent, introducing new work and techniques to fresh audiences. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to see the latest exhibition of two new PhotoHastings members, Agness Clark and Dan Percy, in an aptly named show, Balance in Opposition.

JJ Waller is back in St Leonards

Some photographers decide early on that that is their passion, others evolve and develop over time. JJ Waller tried out a variety of things before picking up a camera seriously and taking to the streets. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was delighted to learn that he is just publishing another book of his St Leonards and Hastings photographs: the characters, the Festivals, the town all with a kind eye and sense of fun.

James Roseveare in the Wood — Site number: 102222

James Roseveare is in the woods where he is possibly happiest, amongst the trees he loves. As a tree surgeon his work is to sculpt and shape trees to keep them healthy, so it is completely logical that he was always going to work as an artist with and within the natural world. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was delighted to find James Roseveare’s new sculptures in a wooded glade in Springfield Wood near Robertsbridge  as part of blackShed’s exhibition Site number: 102222.

Echoes in Electro Studios

The PhotoHastings Festival is definitely underway with more exhibitions scheduled at Electro Studios and Hastings Arts Forum as well as another few weeks of Photology at The Pig. Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went to see the latest Electro show Echoes:visualising thoughts and puzzling material (which can amount to the same thing) by Tracy Jones and Lucinda Wells.

Susan Ormerod has gone potty at Solaris

It is always worth keeping a watchful eye on the exhibitions at Solaris Gallery in Norman Road as they usually put on thought-provoking shows. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was intrigued by the latest show of artist Susan Ormerod’s work, when she saw the gallery invitation — both by the title I’ll take it in red and the image of a solitary pot simply credited as Pots (green) 2020.

Lucy Bell at Photo London

There is always a first time for everything. And this year was gallerist Lucy Bell’s first time exhibiting at the international photography show, PhotoLondon at Somerset House. The fair has been going since 2004 at the Royal Academy, then Old Billingsgate for a year and then stopped. It was rekindled in 2015, had its Covid hiccups and was back again last year. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went to check her out at the Fair.

All at sea at Hastings Contemporary

Hastings Contemporary opened 10 years ago on the Stade, right next to the beach that hosts Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet and where fishermen have been launching and landing their boats for over 1,000 years. It seems apt, therefore, to celebrate those 10 years with the exhibition Seafaring. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was delighted to explore.

Relaxed icons by Carinthia West

Lucy Bell Gallery is known for featuring portraits and performances of 1970s/80s pop stars celebrating those vibrant times when characters were characters, music was music. Their fans have stayed loyal to them; it was their youth too. However, this exhibition is one with a difference. These images by Carinthia West were not taken as a photographer looking in, she was part of the scene, photographing her life as well as theirs. Simply walking into the gallery made Lauris Morgan-Griffiths smile.
