Future of St Leonard’s church explored

James Burton’s original seafront church was destroyed by a doodlebug in July 1944. A replacement was designed by the well regarded Gilbert Scott brothers and finished in 1961. The later church is now in geological trouble and was closed by the Church of England a few years ago. It is an exceptional building (Grade II listed) that should not be lost. A recent meeting addressed ways of saving it. Bernard McGinley reports and took the photos.

Many new signatories for Old Bathing Pool site petition

Organising anything during the COVID-19 restrictions is difficult, but a petition signing went ahead on the Old Bathing Pool site in West St Leonards on Saturday 20 June. This was organised by Save Our Bathing Site (SOBS) and West Marina Org, both local community groups opposing Hastings Borough Council’s plan for a high-rise, high-density housing development on the site. Bryan Fisher of West Marina Org reports.

Grassroots initiative to identify what West St Leonards community really wants

Prompted by what are widely seen as inappropriate council plans for the old bathing pool site in West Marina, the West St Leonards community is now seeking to organise itself to have a greater say in what happens in its area. These efforts are being headed by the West St Leonards Forum, on whose behalf Bryan Fisher has issued this press release.

Help shape West St Leonards’ future – don’t miss public meetings this week

Help Shape West St Leonards! That is the rallying cry from West St Leonards Forum as, against a background of local opposition to council housing proposals on the old bathing pool site and Bulverhythe recreation ground, they urge the community to get behind the development of a neighbourhood plan . Meetings to discuss the proposal will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Forum’s Bryan Fisher explains.
