Japanese teenager lifts piano competition prize

Top prize in Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition went to 17-year-old Shunta Morimoto from Japan, with the UK’s Thomas Kelly the runner-up, as the prestigious classical music event returned after a three-year absence. Nick Terdre reports, photos by Peter Mould.

Celebrity sponsorship for Fat Tuesday Club

Hastings Fat Tuesday has secured sponsorship from the Lakedown Brewing Co. co-founded by Roger Daltrey’s son for the Fat Tuesday Club which helps budding young local musicians develop their skills. Nick Terdre reports.

Covid forces Hastings chess tournament to go online again

Hastings International Chess Congress, normally held over the New Year, was cancelled due to Covid but an online event is to be arranged for April. Nick Terdre reports.

Grant to kickstart urgent repair programme at His Place

The future is looking brighter for His Place community church following the award of a grant from Historic England to perform detailed planning for an extensive programme of repairs and to research its musical heritage. An open day and free concert is planned on 12 March which the church hopes will help drum up community support for its bid for funds to implement the repairs. Nick Terdre reports.

After three-year absence, piano competition prepares its return

The pieces are falling into place for Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition, which begins this month. Fifty young pianists will contest the £15,000 first prize, the jury has been chosen and a graduate orchestra established in partnership with the Royal College of Music will make its debut during the semi-finals.
