Busy month for local refugee support groups

October is a month of action on various fronts for local refugee support groups, including a food collection this coming weekend, a poster campaign around town and the delivery of a petition urging the government to lift the ban on asylum seekers working – all this against the background of the Home Secretary’s announcement that she plans to reform the “broken” asylum system. Hastings begins to open up

Hastings took an important step towards reopening on Saturday as step three of the government’s relaxation of lockdown restrictions came into effect. The council issued a cautious welcome but was pleased to see the West Hill Lift back in operation. New support measures for local businesses were announced by the government today. MP moves into overdrive

Sally-Ann Hart’s claims of “illegal migrants” contested

Hastings and Rye MP Sally-Ann Hart is concerned about refugees crossing the Channel in small boats and making landfall along the south-east coast. Having written to the home secretary about the matter, she has now tabled a question for the home secretary who is due to make an appearance in the Commons on Monday 8 June. Nick Terdre reports.

Council and partners set up community support hub

As the corona virus tightens its grip on society, there has been a heart-warming upswell across the country of support and offers of help for those who most need it – the elderly, vulnerable, those suffering from the virus and those who for whatever reason are unable to provide for themselves in conditions of lockdown. Hastings Borough Council, together with partners, has set up a community hub to coordinate the effort. Nick Terdre reports.

Grassroots initiative to identify what West St Leonards community really wants

Prompted by what are widely seen as inappropriate council plans for the old bathing pool site in West Marina, the West St Leonards community is now seeking to organise itself to have a greater say in what happens in its area. These efforts are being headed by the West St Leonards Forum, on whose behalf Bryan Fisher has issued this press release.
