Hastings turns out for refugees

It was national news recently when it was reported that people on Hastings beach shouted ‘horrible’ abuse as they tried to block the launch of the local lifeboat on the way to assist a small boat in distress carrying refugees. One consequence of this was that donations to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) shot up. Another was that the Council statement on the matter had no Councillors’ names on it.

Calling All Teachers: Free CPD Session on Improving Outcomes for Children from Refugee Backgrounds

For the past year The Refugee Buddy Project has been researching and writing a report on the experiences of local refugee families in education. This report will be launched at a free CPD (Continuing Professional Development) event for teachers and educationalists on 18th November 2021 4.30pm at the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery. There will be refreshments as well as free resources for attendees.

Home Office not planning Napier Barracks replica in Hastings, says HBC

Hastings Borough Council is not aware of any Home Office plans for an accommodation centre for asylum-seekers in the town, the Refugee Buddy Project was relieved to hear when it recently met council representatives. Nick Terdre reports.

Refugee support actions on the Stade and Rock-a-Nore beach

Britain’s treatment of refugees has been to the fore in the town this week, with a demonstration against deportation flights on Thursday and the Lighthouse Project, a show of solidarity with refugees crossing the Channel, due to be held on Rock-a-Nore beach on Saturday evening. Sally-Ann Hart’s claims of “illegal migrants” contested

Hastings and Rye MP Sally-Ann Hart is concerned about refugees crossing the Channel in small boats and making landfall along the south-east coast.
