Hastings begins to open up

Hastings took an important step towards reopening on Saturday as step three of the government’s relaxation of lockdown restrictions came into effect. The council issued a cautious welcome but was pleased to see the West Hill Lift back in operation. New support measures for local businesses were announced by the government today. Coronavirus statistical update: Leicester hotspot revealed by more detailed data

Leicester is now in lockdown, but it only became clear that it was a coronavirus hotspot when a glaring deficiency in the provision of local data was remedied. The more detailed data reveal that the extent of infections at local authority level has been underestimated around the country, including in Hastings, Rother and East Sussex. Battle for legal recognition of humanist marriages goes to High Court

PSC calls for East Sussex pension fund divestments

Already under pressure due to its fossil fuel investments, East Sussex County Council now faces calls to divest from companies which the Palestine Solidarity Campaign says are involved in violations of Palestinian human rights. Nick Terdre reports.

Cycling/walking route among proposals for Hastings in new active travel funding round

East Sussex County Council is now preparing proposals for the second round of funding under the government’s active travel fund. Grassroots groups in Hastings are proposing a sea front-station walking/cycling route as well as cycle racks in strategic locations. Nick Terdre reports.

MP moves into overdrive

Hastings and Rye MP Sally-Ann Hart has suddenly gone into overdrive, sending out half a dozen press statements in the last few days. This publication, however, is still waiting for her to respond to enquiries from more than two weeks ago. Nick Terdre reports.

Stade Saturdays among Foreshore Trust beneficiaries

The Foreshore Trust has awarded  grants worth more than £45,000 to 11 local projects – including Stade Saturdays – offering a response to the effects of the coronavirus. Nick Terdre reports.

Vandals target public toilets

Just a few days after reopening public toilets, several have been vandalised, the council says. It is also just a few days since Conservative councillor Rob Lee criticised the council for being slow to reopen toilets. Nick Terdre reports.
