Stains & Traces at Hastings Arts Forum

Stains and Traces has taken a regular appearance in the HAF calendar in memory of Ian Welsh, a former Chair and champion of the Arts Forum who sadly died a few years ago, who has left this powerful exhibition theme as his legacy. Under the invited co-curatorship of artists Carly Ralph and Mary Morris – alongside selected artists Denise Jones, Annabel Faraday and Debbie Lyddon – HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was eager to see how they had interpreted the theme.

New life in community use for 12 Claremont

Many have wondered while walking past the elegant 12 Claremont – next door to Hastings Library–what is going to happen to it. It was intended as an extension of the library but that dream rose and fell. Well now, at last, this historic building has been acquired by Heart of Hastings CLT who will bring it back to life as a Community hub. Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to the celebration of its successful acquisition to learn more.

Hastings saves Electric Palace from closure

The Hastings community have come up trumps yet again. Through nervousness around Covid, lockdown and social distancing restrictions, the Electric Palace was heading towards closure. A fundraiser was launched and has saved the much-loved Electric Palace from closing its doors for good. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths, a supporter, is much relieved and amazed at Hastings’ generosity – as are the founders of the cinema.

Hastings artists support Hastings refugees

Hastings people are never backwards in coming forwards to contribute to those in need. And artists in particular are generous to a fault in putting their creative hands into their studio pockets to help others. Last weekend, they did it again by kindly offering their work for auction to benefit those who have risked unbelievable obstacles to find refuge on our shores. Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to Stewart Walton about the logistics and generosity of his fellow artists.

Walking the line

Land art, as distinct from landscape art, has always been an interesting  genre: Andrew Goldsworthy, Richard Long, Hamish Fulton, have all left  transient marks on the landscape in the course of their practice. It is  Paul Klee who is famous for his quote: “Taking a line for a walk…”.  And that is precisely what photographer/artist Zoe Childerley did. Lauris Morgan-Griffiths talked to her about walking and documenting the unmarked border between England and Scotland, the results of which can be seen at Solaris gallery.

Turner prize nominees Project Art Works at Hastings Contemporary

It felt odd and exhilarating to walk into Hastings Contemporary and straight into, what in effect is, Project Art Works’ recreated studio space. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was delighted to come face to face with large scrolls of paintings hanging in the Foreshore Gallery. Shortlisted for the 2021 Turner Prize, Hastings Contemporary has given locals the opportunity to see the artists’ work in their home town.
