The Observer Building will soon be reopening its doors to serve the community. Sharon Rhodes got the lowdown from Jess Steele, one of the key players in rescuing this landmark edifice from dereliction.
Jumble aficionados and upcyclers on the hunt for treasures should visit the village of Three Oaks, just outside Hastings, this Saturday, 19 March. The village hall is being put to good use to raise money for the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) Ukraine Appeal, which funds support, food, water, first aid, medicine, blankets and warm clothing for Ukrainians affected by conflict. According to the United Nations (UN), more than 2.5m Ukrainians have fled their country. Sarah Watson, wild food expert and Three Oaks resident, is one of the co-organisers.
Many have wondered while walking past the elegant 12 Claremont – next door to Hastings Library–what is going to happen to it. It was intended as an extension of the library but that dream rose and fell. Well now, at last, this historic building has been acquired by Heart of Hastings CLT who will bring it back to life as a Community hub. Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to the celebration of its successful acquisition to learn more.
Southern Water has told MP Sally-Ann Hart that it performed a clean-up of the section of Bulverhythe beach polluted by July’s sewage leak, but much detritus remains in place. It has also made compensation offers to several affected hut owners – the going rate is around £950. Nick Terdre reports.
Seven weeks after the sewage leak at Bulverhythe beach occurred, there is still no plan for cleaning the contaminated area, nor are Southern Water and Natural England, which has to approve any plan, showing any urgency in tackling the matter.
