A missing treasure found at the seaside

Museum and galleries have reopened, yippee. Culture is being introduced back into our lives. Hastings Contemporary is welcoming the public back with, potentially, a very popular show about the seaside – Seaside Modern. The one-time popular music hall song, Oh I do love to be beside the seaside, Oh I do love to be beside the sea, gives a  vague flavour of it, though not  in a popcorn and slot machine sort of way. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths found it an enticing exhibition to celebrate  art after this long hard year of lockdown.

South-east coast creative adventures

It is gratifying how people, businesses and the creative industries have defied the rigours of Covid while retaining their optimisim and energy.  HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was pleased to discover that seven south east coastal towns have come together to celebrate their stories, histories, community and creativity in outdoor installations.

Local panoramic seascapes in black and white

Jeremy Llewellyn-Jones was all ready to hang his exhibition last year at Hastings Arts Forum when Covid locked everything down. Now slightly revised, and with fingers crossed, it is ready to open. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was intrigued to know more about his amazing seascapes taken at Pett Level, east Hastings, and Polzeath, Cornwall.

Celebrating British folk traditions

Like other galleries which have been unlocked, Lucy Bell Gallery has opened its door again with a suitable May exhibition of idiosyncratic British customs and traditions. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to learn more about and to wonder at the extraordinary antics of the British.

Roff Smith in the East Sussex landscape

Some people have welcomed Lockdown, others have found lack of contact with people debilitating, some have found different ways of coping day to day, others have embraced it and discovered new strengths. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to photographer Roff Smith about how he has kept sane while following his love of  photography and the landscape.

John Cole kickstarts photography book of Hastings fishing families

In 1991 photographer John Cole came down to Hastings from London to take a few photos of the fishing community. This initial brush with Hastings has, in many ways, been a life changer. What he thought would be a day or two of photography turned into a two-year project. Then eight years later he moved down to Hastings and continued taking photographs of the Hastings fishing community. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to him about his love for the Hastings fishing fleet and the town.

Lockdown takeaway and deliveries: Take 2

Is this the second or the third lockdown? HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths has lost count – and at times lost her way entirely. Luckily some good Hastings and St Leonards people haven’t and are keeping us cheerful with takeaway food treats. HOT covered this topic in the last lockdown, so these are a few that are either late additions or that we overlooked previously – apologies for that.

Local artist Laetitia Yhap celebrates  80th birthday with exhibition at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery

Laetitia Yhap is a familiar site cycling around Hastings, usually stylishly dressed with colourful hair to match. It is no surprise to learn that she is a well known British artist. What is incredible is that she is 80 years old and Hastings Museum & Art Gallery is celebrating the event with an exhibition. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was delighted to look at it, distanced, online.
