A colourful journey from Mexico, via Nice  to Hastings

Although we are always surrounded by colour, the changing tones of the sea, sky and trees the world has seemed a little bleak of late. So it is interesting to be reminded of the strength of colour – reds, oranges, blues and greens – that can lift a mood and evoke memories.  HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths found colour writ large in Harriet Macaree’s paintings at Hastings Arts Forum.

Rock stars with a difference

Lucy Bell Gallery’s latest show Days of Rock has a collection of images of some of the effervescent 70s and 80s rock stars and photographers who captured that time both on stage and behind the scenes. Out of this pot pourri of images one particular set is markedly different. They are the work of Andrew Catlin, who has captured, in contrast to the exuberance of the stage acts, quiet and reflective moments. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths. met up with him to find out more about his practice.

Quentin Blake living in worrying times

Sir Quentin Blake, greatly respected artist, renowned illustrator of children’s books and much loved Hastings resident, is living, like all of us, in these Covid-19 suspended animation times. Understandably, as many artists are – and will in the future – he has been exploring the effect of these times,  which has resulted in  an exhibition We Live In Worrying Times. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was intrigued to see some of the images which differ markedly from his previous work.

It’s good to back local businesses who are supporting us in Hastings while we experience self isolation and social distance.

Hastings Museum seeks volunteers to keep Covid-19 journals

What to do in these strange limbo days? We are constantly being told that these  are unprecedented times. And indeed they are. HOT’s  Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was intrigued by Hastings Museum and Art Gallery‘s call-out for volunteers to keep a diary of  these Coronavirus days.

Culture to feed the Covid-19 soul

In these challenging times, we need other things besides food to nurture us. And at this time it is an opportunity to exercise not only our bodies but our minds and do those things that we have always wanted to do – and found excuses not to do  or simply never done or achieved.  Lauris Morgan-Griffiths wondered what there was out there to be enjoyed online, locally and nationally, from your home.
