Hastings turns out for refugees

It was national news recently when it was reported that people on Hastings beach shouted ‘horrible’ abuse as they tried to block the launch of the local lifeboat on the way to assist a small boat in distress carrying refugees. One consequence of this was that donations to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) shot up. Another was that the Council statement on the matter had no Councillors’ names on it.

Sewage detritus remains after ineffective beach clean

No sign of clean-up plan for Bulverhythe beach

Seven weeks after the sewage leak at Bulverhythe beach occurred, there is still no plan for cleaning the contaminated area, nor are Southern Water and Natural England, which has to approve any plan, showing any urgency in tackling the matter. The question of compensation for affected beach hut owners has yet to be decided. Nick Terdre reports.

Trouble at Mill Lane

In 2017 a planning application for a large house in Ore was given approval by Hastings Borough Council (HBC) (ref HS/FA/17/00468 (‘468‘)), subject to certain conditions. The development as approved remains uncompleted. On the other hand, the building has features that lack planning permission. Following two refusals and two failed appeals, there’s a new application. Bernard McGinley reports.

Innovation park plan should be refused, says Greens’ Hilton

The Green Party’s Cllr Julia Hilton has added her voice to the many objections lodged against Sea Change Sussex’s plan to develop the North Queensway Innovation Park, complaining of the council’s lack of scrutiny of the company. Meanwhile Sea Change envisages having the Queensway Gateway road in operation by November, and has been granted funding for the Bexhill Enterprise Park North. Nick Terdre reports.

Foreshore inaction fails to impress, again

The Foreshore Trust (FT) said it would defend the Stade footpath near the boating lake at the Stade Amusement Park. When (following appeals) the footpath was taken over, it did nothing significant. Reportedly the footpath is to be reopened eventually, but when, and for what hours? The Hastings Borough Council (HBC) Charity Committee did not explain. Bernard McGinley wonders what the FT is for.

Closed Country Park footpath to be reopened this year

Full access to Ecclesbourne Glen in Hastings Country Park will finally be restored with the reopening of the main footpath later this year. But according to Save Ecclesbourne Glen group, the failure to investigate the causes of the landslip will make future monitoring of land stability more difficult. Report by Nick Terdre, photos by Russell Jacobs.
