Jack in the Green celebrations return to Hastings after two years’ absence. Local born Andrew Hemsley, journalist for Hastings and St Leonards Observer, writer and a Jack in the Green bogie, talks with HOT’s Chandra Masoliver about this great Hastings traditional festival.
Hastings Seafood & Wine Festival makes a welcome return to the Stade open space this weekend, after a year’s absence due to the Covid pandemic. In addition to the culinary offering, visitors can enjoy popular features including music, The Classroom on the Coast and Sunday’s Jazz Breakfast. Nick Terdre reports.
Hastings Literary Festival has announced this year’s programme. Halted last year due to Covid-19, it is back from 23 to 25 September, with renewed vigour. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths takes a browse through the programme.
Hastings is to host the UK’s first ever ‘Palestine on the Pier’ – a celebration of the best of Palestinian culture including food, music, dance, storytelling, handicraft and children’s activities. The free, daytime event on 5 September is jointly hosted by Hastings & Rye Palestine Solidarity Campaign [HRPSC] and the pier management team Hastings Pier Entertainment Ltd. Katy Weitz writes.
The adjudication of the 2021 online Hastings Musical Festival (HMF) took place on Saturday 27 June and the results are published on the website for Singing, Dancing, Instrumental, and Speech and Drama categories. The entrants were allowed to see the entries from their class and, if the other entrants agreed, to share their videos on a private platform. There were over 500 entries for Dance, over 200 for singing, over 150 for instrumental, and over 130 for Speech.
The May Day bank holiday signals Jack in the Green – and Monday sees a virtual procession of the Jack along the traditional route, the culmination of a five-day festival. Nick Terdre reports.
