Re-regeneration of John Cole’s Fishing Generations

It’s been over a year since Generations: Hastings Fishing Families was published and John Cole was expecting active interest to subside. However, now it has a new exhibition and a rekindling of interest at Farleys Gallery. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was intrigued to know more.

John Cole launches book on generations of fishermen

After almost thirty years of photography, and almost two years of Kickstarter funding and design work, John Cole’s collection of photographs entitled Generations: Hastings Fishing Families will finally see the light of day. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to John Cole about his thoughts and memories of the Hastings fishing folk he got to know quite well – however, there will be a tinge of sadness as some fishermen featured in the book are no longer with us.

John Cole kickstarts photography book of Hastings fishing families

In 1991 photographer John Cole came down to Hastings from London to take a few photos of the fishing community. This initial brush with Hastings has, in many ways, been a life changer. What he thought would be a day or two of photography turned into a two-year project. Then eight years later he moved down to Hastings and continued taking photographs of the Hastings fishing community. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to him about his love for the Hastings fishing fleet and the town.
