After almost thirty years of photography, and almost two years of Kickstarter funding and design work, John Cole’s collection of photographs entitled Generations: Hastings Fishing Families will finally see the light of day. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to John Cole about his thoughts and memories of the Hastings fishing folk he got to know quite well – however, there will be a tinge of sadness as some fishermen featured in the book are no longer with us.
In 1991 photographer John Cole came down to Hastings from London to take a few photos of the fishing community. This initial brush with Hastings has, in many ways, been a life changer. What he thought would be a day or two of photography turned into a two-year project. Then eight years later he moved down to Hastings and continued taking photographs of the Hastings fishing community. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to him about his love for the Hastings fishing fleet and the town.
By all accounts, the gains for the British fishing industry in the Brexit deal were marginal at best – many were left with a feeling of being totally sold out, and none more so than the Hastings fishing community, writes HOT reporter/photographer John Cole.
