Despite government grants, HBC is still under the cosh

The government this week announced a second tranche of funding worth £1.6 billion to help councils cope with the extra costs caused by the coronavirus. Hastings Borough Council says the allocation is well below what it really needs. Nick Terdre reports.

Heart of Hastings feels the loss

Having helped secure £2m for the Heritage Action Zone project, Heart of Hastings is now involved in implementing the project, as well as playing an active role in the community response to the coronavirus crisis. But it continues to feel the loss of what would have been its flagship project, leading a community effort to build a housing estate full of affordable homes in the Ore Valley. This dream was shattered when the owner of the site, Sea Space, decided last year to sell it to a private developer. Nick Terdre reports.

Covid-19 – a possible death sentence for Gazans

Testing for coronavirus – where have we got to?

Is health secretary Matt Hancock on course to meet his target of 100,000 tests a day by the end of April? He’s only got two more days to get there. The target is his – government colleagues have claimed he set it by himself, and even that he made it up on the spur of the moment. And did he mean 100,000 tests carried out, or just capacity to carry out 100,000 tests? Russell Hall, who also did the chart, and Nick Terdre look into the current state of testing.

Headway East Sussex launches fundraiser challenge

Since the coronavirus struck, many charities have been deprived of their main source of income – fundraising through public events such as the London Marathon, which was due to be held today. One such is Headway East Sussex, which supports survivors of brain injuries. Now they have got together with other charities in the same boat to launch the 2.6 Challenge to raise funds, as they explain.

£10m fund to help fishermen hard hit by coronavirus

Community initiative provides emergency food in Broomgrove Estate
