South-east coast creative adventures

It is gratifying how people, businesses and the creative industries have defied the rigours of Covid while retaining their optimisim and energy.  HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was pleased to discover that seven south east coastal towns have come together to celebrate their stories, histories, community and creativity in outdoor installations.

Hearing you loud and clear, Archy!

In Patrick Kealey’s solo show, The Life and Rhymes of Archy and Mehitabel, Archy, free-verse poet and reluctant transmigrated cockroach, energetically and heartfully relates his life experiences – included a failed suicide attempt and his encounters with various other non-human characters. Although his words are inspired by writing from the early 1900s, Kealey passionately delivers a serious, contemporary message for his human audience. HOT’s Zelly Restorick went along to the opening night at The Stables Theatre.

Front row seats for Sparkly Bird show

Kat Lee-Ryan is one of Hastings’ shiniest, sharpest living treasures – throughout lockdown she broadcast a nightly show of lullabies from her home studio, she is half of Kat Dog and the driving force behind big band The Fabulous Red Diesel. She is also the creator of the wonderful musical Sparkly Bird, part of this year’s Brighton Fringe festival which launches this week. Erica Smith sings the praises of this amazing show which explores the flying highs and deadly lows of a young woman at odds with her mental health.

The Life and Rhymes of Archy and Mehitabel

Director, actor, writer and local resident, Patrick Kealey – of local theatre company, Theatre Nation – is about to step out onto the stage in a solo show: The Life and Rhymes of Archy and Mehitabel. Kealey not only adapted the humourous, cult comic writings of Don Marquis (well-known for his highly satirical observations of the human race), he also deliciously embodies each of the fascinating characters, including both Archy and Mehitabel – and more. HOT’s Zelly Restorick tuned in to listen to Kealey’s recent conversation with actor and comedian, Ben Keaton and shares some highlights here. Photos by Peter Mould.
