Lampedusa Cross to go on display at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery

The Hastings Museum & Art Gallery have recently announced that the Lampedusa Cross will be put on display as part of a major exhibition later this year. The exhibition will convey the experiences of the many refugees seeking haven in the UK. HOT’s Jordan Dixon writes.

The spirit of Edward Lear will be here

There can be no better day to launch a festival about Edward Lear than April Fool’s Day – the day chosen by ATownExploresABook festival to start celebrating the 150th anniversary of Edward Lear’s Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets. John Cole kickstarts photography book of Hastings fishing families

In 1991 photographer John Cole came down to Hastings from London to take a few photos of the fishing community. This initial brush with Hastings has, in many ways, been a life changer. What he thought would be a day or two of photography turned into a two-year project. Then eight years later he moved down to Hastings and continued taking photographs of the Hastings fishing community. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to him about his love for the Hastings fishing fleet and the town.

Exploring accessibility in the creative industry

Today the creative industry remains as important as ever, particularly when so much art is consumed during the pandemic. From streaming Netflix or a performance from the National Theatre, at-home art projects to virtual exhibitions. Art, in all its forms, gives people hope, perspective and an emotional outlet.

Designers on the Edge…

‘EDGE – We Made It’ is an exhibition of contemporary craft by second year students on the Designer Maker BA course at East Sussex College, Hastings. The exhibition runs from 1–8 March and in the absence of a real-world opportunity to exhibit, the student designers have created an online exhibition. Erica Smith spoke to Linda King – one of the 11 students participating in the online show.

Four seasons: lockdown through the lens
