Coronavirus statistical update: time to start learning to live with the virus

With the caveat that a final decision will be taken next Monday, prime minister Boris Johnson announced yesterday that most anti-Covid restrictions will be lifted on Monday 19 July. Coronavirus statistical update: Delta on the rise, in East Sussex as elsewhere

The rise and rise of the Delta strain of Covid-19, which has now made its appearance in East Sussex, has finally persuaded the government to postpone for up to four weeks the fourth and final step of the roadmap back to normality which was scheduled for 21 June. Asymptomatic testing starts in Sussex

A first stage of testing people who may have Covid-19 but show no symptoms has got under way in East and West Sussex. Testing is being carried out at two test sites and a number of participating pharmacies.

“See the New Year in at home,” East Sussex residents advised

Rise in cases puts Hastings and East Sussex in Tier 2

A new Covid regime comes into force when the national lockdown ends this week, with Hastings and the rest of East Sussex classified in Tier 2. Despite lockdown limits on activities the past month has seen an increase in the incidence of coronavirus in the town and the county. Nick Terdre reports.

Hastings bar reopens after Covid closure

One of the three Hastings bars forced to shut after a customer contracted Covid-19 reopened this week. With new cases being regularly confirmed in the town, the council has urged citizens to follow official guidance. Nick Terdre reports, photos by Russell Jacobs.

Coronavirus statistical update: test and trace finally goes local

The government has finally accepted that if test and trace is to work properly, local expertise and resources need to be incorporated alongside the centralised system, though there is as yet no indication that local authorities will be given extra funding to do local contact tracing. Separately the Department of Health and Social Care is said to be planning a merger of NHS Test and Trace with the pandemic response work of Public Health England.
