Council calls off Bulverhythe Rec development

The prospect of a large housing estate being built on Bulverhythe Rec has disappeared following Hastings Borough Council’s decision to withdraw its application. The move follows an unfavourable assessment by the Environment Agency of proposed measures to counter the flood risk. Nick Terdre reports.

After consideration, Council obstructs wheelchair-users

The planning committee report on the controversial lift case in Harold Place surprised many by recommending ‘Grant Full Planning Permission,’ despite the application’s obvious breach of the Equality Act and the Building Regs. The meeting is on Wednesday 23 March, and comments can still be submitted till Friday afternoon (18th, at 3pm). Only after the decision will East Sussex Building Control take a look. Bernard McGinley tries to make sense of the new report.

Last-ditch attempt to turn MP on refugee bill

Foreshore Trust continues not to do its job

Since 1893 the Foreshore Trust (FT) has existed continuously, to protect the Foreshore from Rock-a-Nore to Glyne Gap. So why doesn’t it? Why is it passive and supine and secretive? Why does the Council abet this gormlessness? Before the FT’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 14 March, Bernard McGinley revisits an issue that keeps being ignored.

Greenfinch on Bird Feeder

Where have all the greenfinches gone?

When did you last see a greenfinch in Hastings? Probably a while ago – sightings are getting rarer as the population is in serious decline. David Campbell, bird recorder for the Sussex Ornithological Society, said, “Ten years ago we saw greenfinches much more often, but now the numbers have declined by 65% in the south-east.” As climate change causes the Earth to heat up bird diseases will occur more frequently. This article describes how a parasitic bird disease, Trichomonosis and a virus, bird flu, has affected bird species. Richard Price reports.
