Hastings artists support Hastings refugees

Hastings people are never backwards in coming forwards to contribute to those in need. And artists in particular are generous to a fault in putting their creative hands into their studio pockets to help others. Last weekend, they did it again by kindly offering their work for auction to benefit those who have risked unbelievable obstacles to find refuge on our shores. Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to Stewart Walton about the logistics and generosity of his fellow artists.

Meet Dr Owen Johnson, champion of champion trees

If you’re a tree lover you may already know that Hastings has twelve champion trees. A champion tree is the largest of its species in the British Isles. Nine of these are in Alexandra Park. Joan Taylor-Rowan stood under one such tree – an Adpressa yew – with Hastings’ resident and tree expert, Dr Owen Johnson MBE.

Bespoke millinery meets extraordinary local art in Caroline Morris’s Silver Anniversary Show

After running her business for 25 years, St Leonards-based hat designer Caroline Morris is celebrating her anniversary with a ‘silver themed’ show, displaying local artwork alongside hats and headpieces in an iridescent display of all things ‘argenteus’ – meaning silvery, ornamental, and bright. Poly Styrene gets Hastings’ first musical blue plaque

Unhappy at the lack of recognition of the rich musical heritage of the Hastings area, music enthusiasts Jim Breeds, Tony Davis and Andy Gunton got together to form 1066 Music Blue Plaques. The late punk rock and feminist icon Poly Styrene is the first to be commemorated. Andy Gunton explains.
