Two shows signal welcome return for Zoom Arts
Zoom Arts is back with a welcome contribution to the town’s cultural regeneration after lockdown with a two-handed photography exhibition featuring Manhar Chauhan and Maxine Simmonds at Oscar’s and, later in the month, Denise O’Neil
Soaring high: Fabulous Red Diesel
Local band, Fabulous Red Diesel are a fusion of kooky jazz and hearty soul, creating a perfect background for vocals that will make any listener melt. The band has gone from strength to strength over the past few years, offering top quality, professional, unique musicianship – and word of their ability to enchant an audience is spreading across the county and the country. You may have heard word on the street that Hastings has given birth to a new girl band set to make it big. Sharon Rhodes wants to tell you about them in time for everyone to see them at the forthcoming St Leonards Festival – this Saturday, 14 August at 2.30pm on the main stage.
Bloom Britannia: a people’s opera for Hastings
Premiere of the new people’s opera, Bloom Britannia will take place in Hastings this autumn. Telling the story of one extraordinary day in the life of a seaside town, Bloom Britannia brings together a cast of people from the towns of Hastings, St Leonards-on-Sea and Bexhill, performing on stage alongside top professional singers and a live band. Experience a hilarious, raucous, challenging, action-packed, thrilling production celebrating the joy of singing and music to bring our communities together. HOT’s Zelly Restorick went along to the cast’s last rehearsal for the summer.

The White Rock Theatre is re-opening its doors with an impressive range of live entertainment for the people of Hastings and beyond, writes HOT’s Paul Way-Rider. Pandemic artists read their work
On Tuesday 3 August, the De La Warr Pavilion is holding an online reading of comic strips chronicling the last sixteen months of life under Covid restrictions. Erica Smith recommends signing up and listening in to Rachael House and friends.
The return of St Leonards Festival
A summer isn’t a summer without St Leonards Festival pitching up in Warrior Square. August sees the return of this community-minded festival with a fabulous and colourful line up and special adjustments to stay Covid-aware. Erica Smith checks out the treats in store for Saturday 14 August.
