Hastings Women’s Film Festival is back at Kino Teatr screening more movies made by women. Amy Walker, Director of Media Parents and Festival Sponsor tells us why we should be sitting in the cinema to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The Hastings community have come up trumps yet again. Through nervousness around Covid, lockdown and social distancing restrictions, the Electric Palace was heading towards closure. A fundraiser was launched and has saved the much-loved Electric Palace from closing its doors for good. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths, a supporter, is much relieved and amazed at Hastings’ generosity – as are the founders of the cinema.
With great sadness the Electric Palace recently announced that it had to close their doors for January. Due to the understandable concerns over the Omicron variant, January film bookings and venue hire were at an all-time low – consequently, for the time being it is not financially viable to open. However, all is not lost as HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths found out: they launched a fundraiser with the target of £15,000, and there they are – over the line. Yippee!

VENUS is a short film shot in Hastings, co-written by filmmakers Andrew McGee and Tara Shehata and starring Margaret Clunie (Victoria, Last Christmas). It’s a self-contained short story that they are intending to use as a proof of concept to launch a full-length feature film. VENUS is inspired by cyberpunk classics like Blade Runner and Ex Machina. The film embraces the Sci-Fi genre, while sensitively exploring themes of identity, gender and objectification from a unique perspective. The script was also a
