Harry Tryphonos: Minor Sketches
HOT first connected with Harry Tryphonos through his writing about homelessness in Hastings. We knew he was also an artist – and are very happy to promote his latest exhibition at Hastings Arts Forum: Minor Sketches: An exhibition in a range of media; defying narrative & commanding a visceral reaction.
“After a year of hard work and preparation”, says Harry, “working with some fantastic people in the industry and going on many small adventures along the way, it began to seem inevitable as the exhibition approached that it would need to be postponed due to the pandemic.

Soft Eyes
“Now that we are emerging from lockdown, I feel privileged to have the opportunity to play a part in rebuilding the cultural calendar that has been under recent threat. I have always been interested in how the post-war era ushered in a new direction for the arts, particularly in relation to the Festival Of Britain – and I feel that this pandemic too will present a fertile period for the creative industries.
“Although, due to the circumstances, there will be no open night at which to celebrate, I have always wanted my work to be approachable to people from all walks of life and you are therefore all warmly invited to view the exhibition while it runs.
“The most important aspect of my work is not to feel constrained by medium or style, or to belong to a particular school of artistry. I want all of my pieces to be emotional snapshots of a set point in time – and I rarely revisit or make amendments to them, so that they remain raw and uncompromising. For these reasons I am able to retrospectively view pieces as an outsider and this liberates me from applying rigid meanings or influences to my works.”
